Gong Jin Dan (공진단, 拱辰丹, Gong Chen Dan)

Gongjindan is one of the most widely recognized tonics among the public.

According to historical texts, the Seui Deuk Hyo Bang (written by Wei Yilin위역림,危亦林 during the Yuan dynasty in China, 세의득효방, 세의득효방, 世醫得效方, Shi Yi De Xiao Fang) states that it strengthens the innate vital energy, promotes smooth circulation of qi, and harmonizes the five organs.

The Dongui Bogam (동의보감, 東醫寶鑑 authored by the legendary royal physician Heo Jun 허준, 許浚) records that it is used to treat liver deficiency, particularly when the face lacks color, muscles are flaccid, or vision is dim. Even for individuals with a constitutionally weak body, this medicine fortifies the innate qi, raises the kidney energy, and lowers the fire energy, thereby preventing the onset of numerous illnesses.

Recent studies indicate that Gongjindan exhibits antioxidant effects, promotes recovery from central nervous system damage, protects nerves, and enhances memory.

It has also been researched for its potential benefits in cardiovascular diseases, immune disorders, and various other conditions. Additionally, it demonstrates detoxifying properties and liver protection, thereby facilitating smooth circulation of vital energy (qi) and harmonizing the five organs.

Since tonics are potent medicines with strong pharmacological effects, it is best to take them only after an accurate diagnosis by a licensed herbalist, which helps minimize potential side effects. In particular, the name Gongjindan is often misused in the market, so it is important to check the ingredients carefully, as the bioavailability and effectiveness can vary greatly depending on the raw materials used.

Gongjindan is composed of four primary medicinal herbs: Deer Antler Velvet (녹용, 鹿茸, Lu Rong), Angelica Gigas (당귀, 當歸, Dang Gui), Cornus Officinalis (산수유, 山茱, Shan Zhu Yu) , and Musk (사향, 麝香, She Xiang).

Depending on the patient's specific symptoms, its therapeutic range can be further extended by adding or subtracting ingredients such as Ginseng (인삼, 人參, Ren Shen),  Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (숙지황, 熟地黃, Shu Di Huang), or Schisandra Berries (오미자, 五味, Wu Wei Zi).

·       Deer Antler Velvet (Cervus Elaphus): Renowned for its exceptional ability to tonify blood and Yang energy, it strengthens bones and muscles while enhancing antioxidant activities and immune function.

·       Angelica Gigas (Korean Angelica): It promotes healthy blood circulation, boosts the immune system, and has been shown to support cognitive function and memory improvement.

·       Cornus Officinalis (Japanese Cornel Dogwood): It tonifies the Liver and Kidney functions and exhibits significant anti-allergic and anti-diabetic properties.

The key ingredient of Gongjindan, musk (사향), is a secretion from the musk gland of male musk deer, located near the reproductive organs. Only about 30 grams can be obtained from a single deer, making it an extremely rare and valuable ingredient—worth roughly three times its weight in gold.

Its medicinal effects include unblocking stagnation, awakening the mind, and improving blood circulation, which contribute to strengthening heart function, enhancing vitality, providing calming effects, exhibiting anti-inflammatory properties, and supporting male hormone activity.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration (MFDS) recognizes that Gongjindan can be beneficial for congenital weak constitution, general weakness, decreased physical strength due to chronic illness, dizziness and headaches from impaired liver function, chronic fatigue, and menstrual irregularities.
